21st February 2008

There are 2 kinds of positive thinking. When something goes wrong, you try to be positive. This is defensive positive thinking. Or you can be proactively positive. You don't need to wait for something to go wrong. You don't need to really know what to be positive about. Content does not matter. Attitude does.

For example, neuro linguistic programming focuses on the process of turning positive thoughts into positive action.

Watch your thoughts for negative statements or even subtle hints of negativity like: 'I'm going to to achieve the unattainable', which may seem very positive at first. Replace 'unattainable' with 'best'. The more you do this, the better the mind becomes at associating with positive words.

And as I learnt yesterday, the power of imagination (thought) is limitless and magical. To see how, try imagining a lemon in your mouth for the next 30 seconds.

The battle of the mind is the scariest but the most rewarding. Walk away from anything, but never walk away from fighting the mind. It is the smartest piece of living tissue in the universe. This is also the loneliest battle and when you think it isn't, that is your mind trampling all over you. Ultimately, the goal is to lose the mind. But by defeating it, making it beg you for mercy. Don't run away. Be scared if you must, but don't run. There's no place you can run and hide. So don't even think about it.

1st September 2007

When he went blundering back to God,
His songs half written, his work half done,
Who knows what paths his bruised feet trod,
What hills of peace or pain he won?

I hope God smiled and took his hand,
And said, "Poor truant, passionate fool!
Life's book is hard to understand:
Why couldst thou not remain at school?"

By Charles Hanson Towne

I'm not going to write about suicide but the poem beautifully compares Life to a school and a book that must be read and understood. I feel it is more about being reminded because we know the book inside out while in the womb. I am thinking of meditation, taking time out, but this time with a clear conscious intent. And not meditation as I had previously envisaged it to be. A mixture of definitions from so many people I got disinterested. I am also going to move beyond the strong philosophical premise, which I still believe in, that meditation is a 24 hour thing, i.e. constant integrated awareness. I am thinking of actually taking time out, deliberate, clear intent at visualisation and rest. Of lying back, eyes closed, with focus on breath and a distant light getting stronger. I am thinking of meditation that will remind me, irregardless of what I am going through, of something consistent, that never changes. Of a state in which fear and doubt are replaced with faith and promise. A physical deliberate act of taking time out can do wonders. But this time, you are not blundering back to God. You are walking on a path you are familiar with. At the conscious level, I get plenty of rest and energy. At the unconscious level, I am calmer and free.

Life's book is not hard to understand. But to read it, you must close your eyes.

Comic strips have this surreal innocence. They speak of this different age, an age which I was a part of, but did not notice, and now I miss terribly.

I think that age ended when I slipped out of the newspaper reading habit. But it returned in glorious fashion on the Internet over the last couple of days. I found myself hooked and smiling several times, sometimes laughing out loud.

Favourites include classics like Peanuts and Dilbert and more recently Non Sequitur.

A couple of boxes can say a lot.

3rd June 2007

As long as something remains unbelievable, it remains exciting. If you are looking for real excitement, you are actually looking for something impossible or unbelievable. Make it a habit to find something impossible and unbelievable and your life will never be dull again. Something to achieve or something you already have but have taken for granted. People will ask you for the secret behind the sparkle in your eyes, your wry, confident smile and that impossible to imitate laugh.

And when they do, tell them, there's no way! That it is impossible to get. If you say it often enough, they'll figure it out.
